Besan Mawa Barfi Recipe

Besan Mawa Barfi Recipe is a special one for Diwali Period! The festival of lights is around the corner and the truth is we are barely recovering from the Durga pujo excesses. Sugar overdose is an understatement and as I am writing this, I still have some of that nauseatingly sweet “narkeler dudher payesh” (coconut milk pudding) from Lakshmi pujo sitting in the fridge. Yes, I know I was the one who pushed Maa into making it and the perfectionist that she is, no stones were left unturned to make sure it’s perfect. And a perfect narkeler dudher payesh requires the same proportion of sugar as the milk. Not something to be proud of, but then again it’s that time of the year!

Whatever it is, it’s Diwali and I am craving to make some celebratory desserts more than I am craving to eat them. But any words to describe the hecticness of my life are a pure waste of time and energy for both you and me. Nothing new there and the to-do lists are not getting any smaller. So what I need right now is a 15 min dessert, which looks, and taste good and most importantly, is bang on the pre-Diwali vibe. And so here it is my 15 mins Besan Mawa Barfi Recipe.

The Mawa powder that I get here in the grocery store is nothing but a milk powder. So this recipe could well be called a Besan Milk Powder Barfi too. And I tell you Milk Powder is a blessing for people like me who thrive on deadlines. It gives you the authentic reduced milk taste without any arm grease. Standing in front of the stove and reducing milk to make mawa/khoya is for schmucks. You gotta be smart with your desserts. Now it’s a different thing that this very topic has seen the living room turn into a war zone between old schoolers and me. But I could not care less.

Ingredients

  • Ghee – 1/2 cup
  • Besan – 2/3 cup
  • Mawa Powder – 1/2 cup
  • Condensed Milk – 3 tbsp
  • Powdered Sugar – 1/4 cup
  • Cardamom Powder – 1 tsp
  • Edible Silver Foil/Nuts – For garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. In a pan, add the ghee and let it melt.
  2. Throw in the besan and the cardamom powder.
  3. Keep stirring over medium-low flame to roast the besan well so that the raw flavor disappears. This needs to be done for 4-5 mins.
  4. Now add the mawa powder and mix it in. The mixture will look a tad dry at this stage.
  5. Add the powdered sugar and mix it in over low flame so that gets well incorporated.
  6. Now add pour the condensed milk and mix it all in. The mixture should come together.
  7. Remove from flame and pour on a greased container and level it with your hands. It should be about 1/2 inch thick.
  8. Add the edible silver foil/nuts on top and press it on gently. I did not put nuts, as my daughter does not like nuts.
  9. Let it rest for 20 mins . Now cut into squares and serve.

Notes

  • I used ÂĽ cup of sugar as the milk powder is sweetened and I am also using condensed milk. So the barfis are not overtly sweet. If you would like them to be really sweet you can use 2-3 more tablespoons of sugar.
