I have embarrassed my 12 year old really bad this morning and I feel absolutely terrible about it. We have moved recently to a new place and our new residence is in an extremely dog-friendly neighborhood. Every single resident has a dog here. And I harbor an extreme form of cynophobia, to the extent of paranoia. I was probably just 4-5 years old when one of my cousins let his aggressive dog on me and I was almost mauled by it. That incident changed my life completely. I have never been able to be normal around dogs.

G wants a dog but I cannot oblige. If a friend has a dog and I get invited to his/her house, I come up with ingenious ideas to avoid going. Fridays when everyone gets his or her dog to work, I work from home. My next-door neighbor has a dog and he knows of my fear. We have had too many embarrassing face-offs. So he and I avoid each other quite adeptly. This morning G and I were going out of the house and so was our neighbor.

I conjectured that he would be with the dog and instantly let out a gasp and reacted. He just looked at us and contemptuously said, “There’s no dog.” He did not have the dog with him. G was embarrassed and she said ‘Mom, can’t you do anything about it’. I wish I could. I only wish my friends and family could understand how restrictive it is to live with such a fear and if one does not love dogs, one is not a bad soul; one is not a hater!

There are always two sides of anything and very few people have the ability to see both. There are a few like me who would really not mean any harm to dogs or for that any animal ever but at the same time I do not have the comfort around them. And this is a serious problem, which has ended friendships and other precious relationships that I had fostered over considerable time. It’s a limitation, which has only brought me humiliation and pain.

It is like being different from what the whole world is and expects a normal person to be and trying to always convince them that, “Hey, I am not mean, cruel or inconsiderate, it’s just that I have a condition which does not let me feel the way you do.” And trust me, it’s hard to not to miss the disdain and disrespect in the eyes of most.

So it was not a good day for me! More so, I felt that I failed my child today. I worked like a zombie throughout the day and went about my chores. As I was driving back after picking up G from school in the evening, none of us really spoke and I knew I had to break the ice somehow. So I suggested that we make a fancy, chocolate chip cookie {her favorite} together with lots of butter {I could see her melting now and a faint smile at the corner of her lips}.

She had a considerable amount of homework and did not really get hands-on with the cookie. However, she sat at the table next to the kitchen doing her homework while I made the cookie. While I was browning the butter and as the savory, warm and nutty aroma dispersed and diffused in the air, the lil Missy was by my side. She licked off the spatula and then helped me click pictures of the cookie with the ice-cream, running to and fro many times between the patio (where I was clicking the pics) and the kitchen fetching things.

And in the end, G and mom dug into the fat, thick warm cookie with the heavenly scoops of the almond mocha fudge ice cream on top. And G went on to say that this was the best cookie she has ever tasted in her life. The cookie is thick, chewy, and redolent with butter, Nutella and speckled with dark and white chocolate chips. The dad is on the roads this week and so it was a mommy dotty moment for us at the end of the day. We hugged and made up and even discussed the possibilities of getting a dog home after I get cured of my phobia. And I seriously pray that happens one day.

Description

An indulgently warm, easy and EXTREMELY delicious one Skillet Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Skillet Cookie Recipe topped with generous dollops of mocha almond fudge ice cream.

Ingredients

  • Butter – 1 stick (1/2 cup)
  • Dark Brown Sugar – ½ cup
  • Nutella – ½ cup
  • Egg – 1
  • Salt – ½ tsp
  • All Purpose Flour – 1 cup
  • Vanilla Extract – 1 tsp
  • Baking Powder – ½ tsp
  • Baking Soda – ½ tsp
  • Dark Chocolate Chips – ¼ cup
  • White Chocolate Chips – ¼ cup

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
  2. In a skillet (I used a 6 inch one), heat the butter and brown it. You would need about 5-7 mins to do so over medium heat. Do not stir. The color would be pale golden and you will see brown specks settling on the bottom. Remove the foam on top and let it cool completely.
  3. Add sugar, nutella, egg, and vanilla and mix well.
  4. Add the baking powder, baking soda, salt and flour and mix it all in to form a uniform dough.
  5. Throw in the chocolate chips and give one last mix.
  6. Flatten the top of the cookie with the back of your palms or with a rubber spatula.
  7. Put the skillet in the oven and bake for 25-30 mins depending on your oven.
  8. Take it out and serve warm with dollops of ice cream on top. We used mocha almond fudge and the coffee did accentuate the taste of the overall concoction.

Notes

  • Please make sure that your browned butter is cooled before you start mixing the other ingredients. We also drizzled a store-bought chocolate sauce on top of the ice cream.

    • Hi Madhusree, Nutella can be substituted with homemade chocolate ganache or it can be made at home too! I use the Trader Joes’s Vanilla extract. And for the skillet you can easily substitute it with a shallow cake pan.

Thanks for your kind words. Means the world to me!

      Best,
      Soma
