Chocolate Modak Recipe – Ganesha’s Favorite Modak

Just a few days left now. I am eagerly awaiting the arrival of my favorite God. Ganesh Chaturthi is around the corner and it kick-starts my favorite season, the season of festivities. Growing up in Eastern India, Ganesh Chaturthi was never really celebrated in a big way. In fact, we did not even have a school holiday on Ganesh Chaturthi but then our Bollywood Film Industry made the festival ever popular to the rest of India.

And soon the festive fervor that would sweep the West of India slowly made its presence felt in Eastern India. And why not? Lord Ganesha is the master of intellect and wisdom and the remover of obstacles. He is the first to be worshipped in any Hindu ritual or ceremony. And just to make things even better, he is also the ultimate foodie and you would see ladoos, modaks and other sweets happily perched all around him. He is our happy God and should be the food blogging tribe’s mascot, the kind of personality Julia Child endorsed. Yes, “People who love to eat are always the best people.”

Hot Chocolate Modak Recipe – Easy to Make Method

Modaks are the Lord’s absolute favorite and there are many types of modak. One would be the Ukadiche modak, the traditional steamed ones with a casing of rice flour and a filling of coconut and jaggery. And then there are the different spin-offs like khoya/mawa modak, rawa modak, dry fruits modak, chocolate modak recipe and the list goes on.

Every year I would buy modaks and it’s only last year that I first made some mawa modaks. It is actually super simple if you have the mold. The mold is easily available online and on Amazon [2] too. This year I wanted to go for my own spin-off too, something like a fusion idea. My daughter loves hot chocolate and with the onset of fall, it starts making its appearance again in our household especially when evenings start getting chilly. And so I wanted to combine the spirit of the onset of the most wonderful season here in the US too along with the joy of Ganesh Chaturthi. Of course, the motivation to create something that would be admired and enthusiastically consumed by my opinionated teen was quite strong too.

We generally make our own hot chocolate mix. Good quality cocoa, sugar, and milk powder, that’s all it needs. I use the Ghirardelli Cocoa Powder [3]. Or you can choose to use any store bought hot chocolate mix too. The recipe is really simple and the results are phenomenal. They taste just like hot chocolate. If you do not have modak molds, you can just shape them like thumbprint cookies and I can assure you this that the taste will more than compensate for not having the molds.

Ingredients

  • Cocoa Powder – 2 tbsp
  • Granulated Sugar – ¼ cup
  • Milk Powder – 1/2 cup
  • Instant Coffee – 1 tsp
  • Chenna/Homemade cottage cheese – 200 grams

Instructions

  1. In a pan over medium heat, add the chenna and break it down with a spatula.
  2. Add the cocoa powder, sugar and instant coffee. Mix everything together very well so that everything is well incorporated. This step takes about 4-5 mins.
  3. Now turn off the flame and add the powdered milk. Mix it well. It should form pliable dough, which is soft to the touch, and yet it can be shaped into balls.
  4. Make equal medium sized balls. You would get anywhere between 6-8 balls.
  5. Grease the modak molds, and add one ball in it and shape it.
  6. As the modaks sit on the countertop, it would become relatively firm to the touch.

Notes

  • The chhena is obtained from curdling around 1 liter of full fat milk. The amount of chhena obtained from 1 liter of milk will differ depending on the quality of milk.
  • Once cold knead the dough well before shaping them into modaks.
